Dealing With Fear and Insecurities of Life

Text: 2 Timothy 1: 6, 7 “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”

Timothy would have been categorized as a young adult today. Commentaries showed he was introduced into the ministry as early as 16 years of age, and at this time when Paul wrote to him, he should have been about 30 years.

It was deliberate to start the text from verse 6, so you could have a broader understanding of why Paul was talking to Timothy about Fear. Paul felt God had deposited so much in Timothy. He knew that Timothy had so much gifts, but because of fear he could not reach his full potential.

Many of us today are yet to use-up what God has deposited in us, but one very crucial obstacle is FEAR.

“For God has not given us…” Most of us focus on what God has not given us, and forget and forfeit what God has given us.

What is Fear?

Simple definition: False Experience Appearing Real.

And this is even worse, the Spirit of fear. It’s a spirit.

To explain further, look at the encounter of Moses with God at the Burning Bush Center.

Now, God told Moses to drop his rod and then it turned into a snake. Then God told him to pick it up. If it were you what would you do?

I’m scared of snakes. I’m sure Moses would have been kind of scared too. (Especially for a snake that could swallow other snakes, it must have been a big one). And he was to pick it up from the tail. (which makes it deadlier, I hear animals go mad when you do that). But I don’t think Moses saw the snake, but his rod. Yeah the snake is real, but that was his rod. He would have to overcome his fears to pick it up, and once he did, it was his rod, that same rod that could do wonders.

Fear will make you focus more on the snake, and less on your rod. God was teaching him how to deal with his fears.

Pick up your fears, and see what God will do with what you have. Some of you are not picking up what God wants you to pick up, because you are scared. But God says today, Go pick that up. Don’t know – it might be an application form, business proposal, start-up idea, sister (in marriage)…I don’t know, but God says go pick THAT up, and see what it will turn into.

What are the fears of Young adults today?

Falling, Failure, Foes, Forces, Future, Finances etc.

Let’s see how Jesus dealt with fear with his disciples:

John 20: 19  – 22. “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.”

  • The doors were shut because of fear. Do you know that many doors of opportunities have been closed in our lives because of fear? There are places God will take us to, if we don’t allow fear to control our doors.
  • Jesus stood in the midst of them. That is exactly what God wants to do today in your lives. He wants to stand in the midst of those fears, if you allow him. And I pray he comes into your fears today in Jesus’ name.

When Jesus came into their lives, he did three things: “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost”

  • He spoke Peace into their lives. “Peace be unto you” Fear drives away peace. That is why Jesus spoke peace first into their lives. Today, I speak peace into your lives in the name of Jesus.
  • He Spoke Purpose into their lives. “as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you”. That is purpose. Once you know that God has a purpose for your life. There is no need to fear.

There is an Ultimate Purpose: To glorify God on earth and meet with him in heaven.

There is also a Definite Purpose: The purpose why you are where you are today is unique. And it might be different tomorrow. God has a purpose for every phase of your life. So ask God, why am I here today? Why am I in Atlanta? Was it by chance or by divine arrangement? What is it that God wants you to do? Once you figure that out, you achieve that, and God takes you to the next level.

The reason why most of us remain at a level, is because we have refused to know what God wants you to do at that level. And God wants you to fulfill that, before he takes you to the next level. I have seen that many times in my life.

It’s like you getting into a bus with many stops but a final destination, but for every stop you are expected to do achieve a purpose.

I was born in Lagos, I wanted to remain in Lagos by all means, but I was not moving forward. No admission, after many trials. Then God opened a way for me to move to PortHarcourt, I didn’t know why at that time, but thank God I went. And God made me to know why I came there, and by God’s grace, He used me to touch many lives, train many people, and leave a legacy there. Then, he took me to Bayelsa after my program in PH. My desire was to go back to Lagos, (I applied for several internships in Lagos, it all failed, even with a commissioner’s connection) but God wanted in Bayelsa. A very small city in the South. Well, I had no option but to go there. Then I saw why God brought me there. I did my best to make sure I fulfilled my purpose there. Then God sent me for another year to a village I have never heard of. Again, I wanted to go back to Lagos, at least stay with my parents, and practice in better hospitals. But God said no, it’s a very rural village this time, I was literally living close to Gorrillas and Chimapanzees, which I visited often. And God also used me there, so much that after when it was time for me to leave, they begged me to stay.

Not more than 6 months. I found myself in America. And I’ve been praying to God will give me the grace to fulfill the purpose he has brought me here for. That is why these days, I’m not scared of anything. If God brought me here, he will keep me here.

The prayer is God help me to fulfill my purpose anywhere I am.

God might not give you the details, but he will surely give you direction.

Understand that as a Christian, nothing happens to you by mistake.

  • Also, He spoke Power into them. “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost” You need the Holy Ghost Power to make a difference in our lives.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power”

What do you understand by Power?

When I think of Power, I think of the Processor of a computer. No matter how beautiful a laptop is, if the processor is low, things will move so slowly. The icore needs to strong. Icore7, icore 9, dual core etc.

How is your core? Is it powerful?

Eph 3:20…He is able to do exceeding, abundantly, above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in you. (according to your core).

Things will move around for you, based on what is in inside of you.

For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”

The other thing God has given to us is Love.

What can you say about love?

But you know, Jesus said “Love your neighbor as yourself”. So it starts with loving who you are.

If you love yourself:

  • Lease yourself to God
  • Learn yourself. Do you know you? Know who you are? Realization of your present location is the first step in determining your future destination.
  • Load yourself with knowledge
  • Lose yourself from things holding you down.

Then the last thing Paul said God has given is: Sound Mind.

I pray that your mind will be sound.

God said “I know the thoughts that I think towards you, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end”.

Let your mind be filled with the thoughts of God for you.

A mind-blowing verse: Luke 22:9 – 12

  • God has prepared your future for you.
  • There is room in the future for you.
  • That room is furnished not empty.

Are you afraid you might not get a job? God said he has an office furnished and waiting for you in that BIG company.

Are you afraid you might pass your exams? God said your seat in the next level is furnished and waiting for you.

Are you afraid you might not get married? God said your future family is prepared and waiting for you.

Are you afraid of settling down here in America? God said your future house is prepared, furnished and waiting for you.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind”
